HI Joe,
I have been going through a similar situation with Nextel. Except my
phone broke and with Nextel you can't just walk into a store and buy a
phone without extending your contract. Since I have 6 months left on my
contract, it would cost me over $200 for a new phone even if I renewed
my contract for two years.
One thing you can do is to check with all your friends who might have
phones left from previous contracts that might have a sim card you can
use.
In my case, I had my number changed from my broken phone to my wife's
phone and I borrowed a tracfone from her sister and activated it. My
wife doesn't use her phone much so I think we can get by for 6 month
this way and it will only cost me $50 to $60 for the 6 months.
I tried some of our friends to see if I could get one of their old
Nextel Phones but wound up with a couple of old phones that did not
have simm card technolgy.
If I had purchased insurance with my package, I would not have had any
problems replacing my phone but for around $5 per month per phone, I
still don't think it is worth it.
Good Luck,
David
