I have Verizon Wireless, which is similar to Alltel (both are CDMA
carriers), and have and LG enV. Verizon also has tethering, so my
description probably won't be that different from what Alltel offers)
When tethering with a cell phone, all the ****ts are opened, so you
might want to have a firewall up and running.
Although the speeds aren't bad for a cell phone, there is tremendous
lag in online games (for example, in the PC game Counter Strike, my
ping is up in the mid-200s, while everyone else is in the mid-50s).
And on top of that, you can surf the net while sitting in the back of
a car going 50MPH!
Actually, I am connected to the net right now with my cell phone.
Here is a speed test that I just ran.

All in all, it isn't that bad for a cell phone connection.
