After several hours with the battery & SIM card removed, the phone is now 
working again.  The red circle under the battery is a moisture indicator
and 
presumably deactivates the phone to avoid any damage.  Maybe it will 
eventually change colour again.  I still can't understand how this
happened, 
as the phone has never been wet, apart from a few drops of lager!
