is a good resource. Browse the "tools" section.
There are also quite a few dev boards over at Sparkfun in the
development tools section. http://www.sparkfun.com/.
As far as ISP hardware goes, the USB-interfaced AVRISP-2 is probably the
way to go. Cheap and sup****ted, carried by Digikey et al.
WRT compilers, there is a good, community sup****ted gcc ****t at
http://sourceforge.net/projects/winavr.
On the commercial side, I like Imagecraft's offering

They also have a "eBox" kit that includes
compiler, board, LCD, keypad, etc. The ISP gizmo it comes with is
serial; I assume they're using the standard AVR pinout (it's likely a
clone of the original AVR ISP) so it should work with the USB AVRISP-2.
