The choices are interpolation or simply carrying twice the needed
sample rate through the complex stage.

Realize that interpolation is as simple as pu****ng actual samples
alternated with zero into a low pass filter...

Then realize that the LO used for ****fting also produces 50% zeros,
and there are a lot of potential simplifications to the calculation of
that low pass filter...
