While disks often have read errors and may become extremely
slow or unbootable, this is the first I've heard of a disk
actually "smoking" without being hot-plugged or shorted.
Unfortunately, in this state the disk is likely unrecoverable
in its current drive and would need the platters remounted
in a different mechanism. This is a very specialized service
typically costing many $100s with no guarantee the data
won't be at least partially corrupted.
This is why people make backups.
