You might have a chance to get your data back without going to _very
expensive_ data recovery pros. The smoke means you fried the
electronics, and the actual platters were most likely unaffected. Try
to get the _exact same_ drive - if it's not too old, chances are
someone is still selling those, and even with older drive you might
have a chance finding the match. With minimal assembly skills you
should be able to replace the fried pcb with the good one from the
other drive. If you have not fried the motor, and if the heads didn't
scratch the platters when the drive's brains were fried, you might
have a good fighting chance.
If you are not lucky, you would have to go to data recovery services
and spend a few hundred$ to get your doc back - if you think it's
worth the money. Still no guarantee of recovery but hey - they even
recovered data from the drive fried (literally!) in Columbia space
shuttle crash
