Thanks Dennis, I sometimes wonder the same thing. But some of it is the
"this is what I bought so it has to be the best" thingy.
And then there is the new to navigation and new to GPS thing. I've
"converted" a few people to true believers in the course of car rides
and boat deliveries. And I've also converted a few happy first GPS
owners into unhappy owners by enlightening them as to what they were
missing or did not have.
Has anyone else noticed how dumb the newer Garmin marine chart plotters
are? The damn things will not allow you to upload waypoints and routes
and do not have any NMEA I/O!
As I remember the discontinued products like the 276, and maybe the
378/478 that the OP asked about, there were some pretty good multi-use
marine/highway units out there in the past. But those are discontinued
now and the dumbed down 5xx series will never find a place in my heart
nor would I recommend one on a boat.
I don't know if Garmin is doing refurbished units on some of the last
generation of marine chart plotters but I'd look at those before I'd buy
a new one. Those usually come with all the do***entation and software,
have the same one year warranty as the new units, and are often a *lot*
smarter as far as navigation features.
