Does anyone here know anything about a "gas lock" status in an
alternator regulator when it's not supposed to be there?
I am running a Next Step regulator with an Ample high output alternator.
The setup has worked properly for ten years. Upon startup this year the
V-belt was so stretched it would hardly turn the alternator and the red
error LED lit up. New belt installed. Red LED gone, replaced by fla****ng
green, three seconds on, one second off. This indicates "gas lock"
condition. But the "lock" terminal is not connnected to anything.
Purpose of the setting is to limit charging voltage below the gassing
level of the battery, 13.8 V or thereabouts. But the battery voltage is
well below that though fully charged.
Anybody have an idea what's going on here and what tweak, if any, might
correct it? Jack Rabbit Marine, from whom I bought the system, has not
handled Ample Power products for several years and could not help while
Ample's response was simply buy a new one.
I am not averse to buying a new one if that's what it takes. It's the
hassle of removal and installation in small spaces where I don't fit so
well anymore.
